Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 1, 2012from the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, shared values, respectedsymbols, privileged legal status, diverse worldwide capacities for voluntary action at community level andgiving national and global voice to the concerns of vulnerable people.Strategy 2020 focuses on three strategic aims:1. Saving lives, promoting livelihoods and strengthening recovery from disasters and crises2. Enabling healthy and safe living3. Promoting social inclusion and a culture of non-violence and peace? 450 natural disasters were reported in2010 compared to 90 in 1970. That’s a500 per cent increase.? There are 215 million migrantsworldwide. Most do not have access toformal social welfare systems.? Over 60 per cent of National Societiesworldwide have a preparedness role intheir country’s national emergency plan.? In 2010, more than 17 million peoplebenefitted from Red Cross RedCrescent disaster risk reduction trainingsuch as climate change preparednessand logistical planning.Saving lives, promoting livelihoods andstrengthening recovery from disasters andcrisesLocal Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers andstaff are often first on the scene of a disasterand remain with the affected people throughoutrecovery. But effective disaster management workoften starts much earlier. Long before the onset ofa disaster, National Society volunteers and staffsupport their communities in identifying localhazards, vulnerabilities, capacities and copingmechanisms. Together with relevant authorities,the Red Cross Red Crescent develops localpreparedness and response plans and improvesearly warning systems.Having the right legal frameworks in place isalso essential. As part of the IFRC’s DisasterLaw programme, the IFRC is helping NationalSocieties to provide their governments with world-Eye on 2011: Italy ? the impact of civil unrest in North AfricaDuring the Arab Spring and beyond, National RedCross and Red Crescent Societies throughout theMiddle East and North Africa have played a vitalrole in meeting the humanitarian needs of peopleforced to flee their homes. On the borders of Libya,for example, the Egyptian Red Crescent and theTunisian Red Crescent provided essential care tohundreds of thousands of migrants from everycorner of the world. However, the impact of thecivil unrest was not only felt in the affected region.The small Mediterranean island of Lampedusa inItaly received thousands of migrants on its ownshores. The Italian Red Cross opened severalreception centres located in different regions ofItaly providing health and humanitarian assistanceto migrants transferred from North Africa.Among these centres was the‘Village of Solidarity’.Opened in March of 2011, this included a hugereception centre for asylum-seekers and hostedmore than 1,600 migrants of different nationalities.130 staff and volunteers of the Italian Red Crossserved in the centre, providing migrants with healthassistance, food, accommodation and interculturalmediation services.“I arrived on Lampedusa and my life changedimmediately,”says Ramzi, a former professor ofchemistry and physics in Tunis.“All that I havebeen through and all the support I received fromthe Italian Red Cross made me understand that myplace is here, in Italy.
