Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 1, 2012? Each day, 4,200 people die fromviolence.? The Red Cross Red Crescent hasreached more than 2,000 young peoplewith YABC themes such as nondiscrimination, intercultural dialogueand violence prevention and mitigationin 125 countries.? As part of their work to improveconditions for migrants, NationalSocieties provide reception servicesand foster social participation, supporting hundreds of thousands ofpeople in 2010 alone. An example ofthis is engaging migrants as Red CrossRed Crescent volunteers.? National Societies promote thedesign of women-friendly volunteerprogrammes in communities wheregender is a barrier to inclusion. At the national level, the IFRC calls ongovernments to pursue a needs-based approachin addressing inequitable access to health. Inparticular, this includes the provision of healthcare to women and children throughout their livesand improving access to health information forall. We will continue to advocate on behalf of themost vulnerable people, with the goal that one dayeveryone will be within reach of quality healthcare.Promoting social inclusion and a culture ofnon-violence and peaceViolence, discrimination and exclusion, oftencaused by ignorance or fear, are humanitarianchallenges that cause suffering for millionsof people. Our Red Cross and Red CrescentFundamental Principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unityand universality put the Red Cross Red Crescentin a privileged position to bring diverse groupstogether in dialogue. The IFRC believes that youth in particular havea major role to play as agents of change in theircommunities which is why they train young people as peer educators. Youth as Agents of BehaviouralChange (YABC) is a programme that equips young people with skills such as active listening, mediationand non-violent communication. In all that the IFRC and its National Societies do, humanitarian diplomacyefforts also work to identify public policies that exclude and alienate vulnerable communities, and advocateto address them through dialogue with decision makers.A young Tunisian migrant sitsoutside the advanced medicalpost, together with Vito Liantonio,a volunteer of the Italian RedCross.cGiovanni Zambello / IFRCKenya Red Cross, Busbus Village,1 1/2 hours south of Wajir, NorthEastern Kenya.
