Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 4, 2015of multiple medical examination and treatment departments, they became part-time lecturers after thereorganization. Since Yasuko Higuchi was appointed as President in 1994, the Presidential post has beenassumed by personnel who completed nursing education.The student quotas of the College at the time of establishment were 60 and all students had to live in adormitory for the first two years, followed by a subsequent two years attending College from home orboarding house. The curriculum was organized to search for nursing science in response to the basicquestion“What is a human?”Under the curriculum, students first studied subjects of general educationon humanities, society and nature, Red Cross-related topics and foreign languages, before majoring inspecialized basic subjects related to medical science and specialized education subjects in nursing science.A course allowing the qualification for the national certified midwife examination to be obtained wasoffered to six selected students who had met the qualifications for the national certified examinations ofnurses and public health nurses. In later years, the dormitory was only offered for those who applied.The college became a coeducational course in 1996, while the system to allow entry to the third academicyear from outside the College got underway in 1998. The College concluded an agreement on promotingacademic cooperation with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (School of Nursing) in 2000and the agreement with the Red Cross University College in Sweden to promote cooperation in nursingeducation and research and development in 2008; kick-starting a student exchange programme.In 2005, the College was integrated with the Japanese Red Cross Musashino Junior College of Nursing andbecame a new“Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing.”The student quotas rose to 140 and a new schoolbuilding was completed in 2006. The new building had two wards, a four-storey east building, six-storeysouth building and accommodates four practice rooms, a library of 130,000 books storable in its basementand a large lecture hall (Hiroo Hall) accommodating 600 people.As for the curriculum, subjects related to the Red Cross,foreign languages and medical science are incorporated inits basic subjects, which aim to nurture human resourceswith wide-ranging education and rich humanity, pursuantto a philosophy of establishment. Leveraging the basicsubject, a subject group specialized in nursing offersstudents the chance to learn about specialized knowledgeand nursing science skills from foundation to appliedlevel in stages. As mentioned later, current qualificationsoffered for the national certified examination are limitedto nurses (for all students) and public health nurse (only 20students) because the course certifying the qualificationfor the national certified midwife examination has beenoffered as part of a master’s degree and it has subsequentlyDisaster Nursing simulation in assembling a tent andpractice relief activities in front of collegecJapanese Red Cross College of Nursingbecome difficult to assist field training at a healthcare center and certify qualification for the nationalcertified public health nurse examination due to the rapid increase in the number of nursing colleges.In 1993, the Graduate School of Nursing was approved and the first master’s program of the Japanese RedCross Academy was established. Subsequently, in 1995 when the program was completed, the doctoralprogram was launched. The specialized subjects initially set included Fundamentals of Nursing Science,Psychiatric Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Child and Family Nursing, Maternity Nursing, NusingEducation and Nursing Management (Psychiatric Nursing was later renamed as Mental Health Nursingand Adult Health Nursing and International Nursing of Disaster Nursing were newly introduced).The master’s program in international health care and midwifery was established in 2007.
