Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 4, 2015The Swedish Red Cross University CollegeEva von Strauss, RN, PhD 1Ann-Charlotte Egmar, RN, PhD 2Tommy Lofgren 3IntroductionThe Swedish Red Cross University College (SRCUC) is owned by The Non-profit Foundation for the RedCross University College (Stiftelsen Rodakorshemmet) which is an affiliated foundation to the SwedishRed Cross. It is a state-funded self-governed university. Operations are conducted on the basis of TheRed Cross and Red Crescent Movement's (RCRC) seven fundamental principles; humanity, impartiality,neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.SRCUC have trained nurses since 1866The education of nurses started in 1866 by the Swedish Red Cross (the Red CrossSchool of Nursing), and was the first secular nursing education in Sweden. Thefounder was a woman named Emmy Rappe (picture) and whom the followingyear was sent to London on behalf of the Swedish Red Cross to train as a nurseby Florence Nightingale at St Thomas’Hospital. The very first nurses wereprimarily trained to take care of wounded in war, and in 1897 two SwedishRed Cross nurses were sent to the war in Greece. Since then, the SRCUC havetrained nurses with the competence and skills required for global work, and alsohighly contributed to the development of the Swedish healthcare system.The SRCUC is today one of Sweden’s leading educators in health care andnursing, at both undergraduate and advanced level. The nursing programprovides a graduation as a registered nurse (professional degree) and a bachelorof science in nursing (academic degree), as well as a specialist program thatEmmy Rappec Swedish Red CrossUniversity Collegeoffers a master’s degree in nursing science (areas of intensive care and psychiatric nursing). Furthermore,individual courses are given including emergency medical care and trauma treatment.The SRCUC is located in the center of Stockholm and has today approximately 650 undergraduatestudents, 50 students on advanced level, and 65 employees. In the beginning, the nursing education wasoffered on a boarding school basis and for women only. Today about 20% of the nursing students are men,which is the highest in Sweden.Characteristics of uniquenessThe Red Cross profileThe international RCRC is the largest humanitarian organization and the premier disaster organization inthe world. It has nearly 100 million members, volunteers and supporters in 189 countries. The SRCUC’saffiliation to the RCRC is what distinguishes this university college from all other higher education inSweden. This is made visible in both education efforts to provide global perspectives within the varioussubject areas, and in the international collaborations that SRCUC has with universities and clinicaloperations in different parts of the world.
