The Journal of Humanitarian Studies

Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 4, 2015(placement abroad) and research. Students and teachers are thus given unique opportunities to achievegreater knowledge of international health, health prevention and health promotion among vulnerablegroups, and health inequalities in any form of society.National perspective. To create societal conditions for good health on equal terms for the entire populationis a national overall target for the work of public health in Sweden. The health of the population is animportant indicator of wellbeing, but you do not have to leave Sweden to meet people living in deprivationor people from different cultures with different ethnic backgrounds. The SRCUC’s affiliation to theSwedish Red Cross creates opportunities for students to do project work at the various national Red Crosschapters. Field studies can also be made at refugee camps, in ambulance operations and the prison andprobation service, and at child care- and health care centers to get the vital experience of working in today'smulticultural society.International perspective. The SRCUC has always enjoyed an active international profile that still today, enriches and characterizes the education and training programs. The close link to the IFRC and theinternational RCRC offer students opportunities to do clinical placements as well as minor field projectswithin the IFRC and/or other international Red Cross societies.Major activitiesEducationThe SRCUC is educating nurses in a first cycle program and a second-cycle program. The nursing programcover three years full time studies of a total of 180 credits (1.5 credits equals one week) and leads to aBachelor degree (B.Sc.) in Nursing, and a license to practice as a registered nurse by the Swedish NationalBoard of Health and Welfare. In line with the Red Cross movement, nurses educated at the SRCUC aretrained to have special knowledge about the work with vulnerable groups in any society worldwide. Theyare also trained to have knowledge about how to prevent disasters and to have preparedness to take part indisasters and in international public health programs. We have international collaborations that enablingthe students to study broad. The nursing education at the SRCUC is one of the most requested in Swedenand has the highest number of applicants per place. An international learning environmentBoth students and teachers are actively involved in various forms of international exchange programsand educational development projects. A number of teachers and students are each semester traveling tocountries like Tanzania, Ghana, Iraq, Thailand, India and Japan, and in return, students and teachers fromthese countries will visit the SRCUC. The length of the studies abroad varies between three to 12 weeksdepending on the agreements for exchange. The SRCUC has bilateral agreements directly with the partnerinstitutions and participates in major exchange programs, i.e. Erasmus, Linnaeus-Palme and Minor FieldStudies. Some teachers also have significant experience of working as international delegates and withdisaster nursing.Student participationThe students are represented in all decision-making bodies at the SRCUC, such as the University Board, theSteering Committee, the Education Committee, the Research Committee, and in various project teams forquality development. It is central and valuable for the SRCUC in several ways that students are involvedin the planning and evaluation of the educational activities. E.g. evaluations are done by students aftereach course which can lead to improvements and/or changes in the syllabus. The students themselves alsoconfirm that this influence is valuable for them both during and after their training. There is also an activestudent organization. There are also plans for the students to be more involved in the actual teaching.人道研究ジャーナルVol. 4, 201551
