Journal of Humanitarian Studies Vol. 4, 2015The Only One Red Cross College of Nursing in ThailandAnchalee Chutitorn, R.N., Ph.D. 1Brief HistoryThe Thai Red Cross College of Nursing (TRCN) was established in 1914 as a gracious contribution ofQueen Saovabha Pongsri, first president of the Thai Red Cross Society. It became the first nursing schoolwhich taught general nursing and solely nursing college of The Thai Red Cross Society in Thailand.The College restructured the previous nursing program and introduced a four-year Bachelor of NursingScience in 1971. During 1980s, TRCN was initiated in response to government development in the nursingprofession. Most faculty members have been trained advance nursing in graduate level from both nationaland international perspectives. At the same time in connection with this development, two latest classroombuilding and a dormitory have operated in 1998.TRCN has affiliated with Chulalongkorn University, offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and anumber of specialty nursing courses. The nursing college has been recognized as one of high standardnursing schools in Thailand. We have been accredited by The Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council, Theoffice for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (Public Organization), and Commissionon Higher education.TRCN has 85 full time faculty members and 103 administrative and supportive staffs who dedicatethemselves to provide high quality pedagogical courses, clinical supervision, and mentorship for our nursingstudents. Each year student enrolling approximately 900 full time nursing students in its baccalaureate,post graduate, and practical nursing programs, TRCN develops strong leaders who shape the professionof nursing and have a powerful impact on the health care environment. The Red Cross Principles areintegrated into all of the TRCN’s initiative programs. A four year curriculum leading to a Bachelor ofScience in Nursing (BSN) enrolls around 190 first year students per year. Currently, nursing students hadgraduated over 9,500 outstanding registered nurses, 1300 nurse specialists, and 1,800 practical nurses.In addition to having hospital -based focus, the nursing curriculum is integrated, progressing along a lifespan continuum. This approach to learning allows the student to progress through the nursing programalong a path similar to that of the growth and development of individuals. Students must have successfullycompleted the non-nursing courses of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and psychology before enrollingin Fundamental of Nursing, Health Promotion Nursing must be taken prior to or concurrently with thesefirst semester sophomore courses. Life span must be taken and successfully in courses of Adult nursing,Pediatric nursing, Family nursing and Midwifery, Geriatric nursing, Psychiatric nursing, Community healthnursing, Research in nursing, and Nursing Administration. Upon completion of those courses the students’progress through the curriculum as outlined for the remainder of the sophomore, junior, and senior years.The pre-licensure course work for the nursing curriculum is divided into theory and clinical courses. Thetheory courses are organized in life span sequence and present concepts, theories, and processes that aredirectly related to the clinical setting and the age of the clientele in those settings.
